This week's newsletter is sponsored by Seton Hill University's Online Professional Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Designed by Seton Hill's Education Program, this online program takes up-to-the-minute research and uses it to provide educators with practical methods for addressing the needs of students with ASD. Seton Hill created this graduate-level, four-course program with teachers (and their busy schedules) in mind, and in response to a critical shortage of professionals trained and certified in appropriate assessments and treatments for autism.

  • The graduate-level Professional Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders is offered completely online.
  • Teacher certification is not a requirement for admission to this program.
  • Four comprehensive courses:
      • Autism Spectrum Disorder: Theory and Practice
      • Autism Spectrum Disorder: Strategies for Developing Social Competence
      • Autism Spectrum Disorder: Applied Behavior Analysis
      • Autism Spectrum Disorder: Assessment, Curriculum and Transition

The courses taught in the program can also be taken as part of Seton Hill's Master of Arts Degree in Special Education or Inclusive Education.

This week, Education World reviewed three Web sites of interest to educators.

Site Review: Digital Vaults
Nothing beats seeing a hand-written document from someone who previously you’ve only read about. This site is perfect for bringing history alive.

Site Review: SparkTeens.com
SparkTeens.com includes articles on fitness, nutrition and healthy living, as well as calculators to track weight, measurements, exercise and food.

Site Review: LaunchPad
This is a youth publishing site that gives young writers and illustrators an online method for sharing their work.

Site Review: Digital Vaults
The National Archives Experience Digital Vaults site is filled with scanned copies of original documents, letters, posters, artwork and more.

Rating: 4 stars

Review: In terms of making history truly come alive, nothing beats seeing a hand-written document from someone who previously you’ve only read about. No longer is that person a static name on a page; instead he or she is someone who held a pen (or quill) and wrote those words. This site delivers not only the special magic of the documents, but also digestible facts and notes. Kids will appreciate the cool aesthetics of the site while also learning tidbits of history and developing an appetite for more.

Site Review: SparkTeens.com
Based on the popular free health Web site SparkPeople.com, SparkTeens.com is a healthy-living site aimed at 13 to 17-year-olds.

Rating: 3 stars

Review: SparkTeens looks and feels a lot like its adult counterpart, SparkPeople. The site offers healthy-living advice to teens and also gives them the opportunity to interact with each other. For teachers, there is the opportunity to log on and create a SparkTeam for their class, which can be used for discussions and common goals. There is no way for teachers to specifically track students’ participation and use of the site, however.

Site Review: LaunchPad
This is a youth publishing site that provides young writers and illustrators with an online method for sharing their work with others.

Rating: 4 stars

Review: Reading the offerings is reasonably easy. A scrolling window allows the reader to browse the pages of a selected title without having to navigate multiple windows. The ability to download the file as a PDF is nice for those who want a physical copy.

The submission process is very easy, consisting of filling out a handful of informational boxes and uploading the doc or image file. Students are required to provide a parent’s email address as a security method.
