Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

Rules in School
Nothing is more wonderful than a well-run classroom, where students have internalized the classroom rules, and where those rules "add up" to a logical way to maintain a good learning environment. Another great thing is the positive impact the experience of learning to internalize a good set of rules has on the kids beyond the classroom. This book from the folks at The Responsive Classroom® offers a method of thinking about developing rules, including developing consequences for breaking rules. Enjoy! But no talking!

32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny
Teaching is a human job, and this book is a great one for capturing the day-to-day delights of leading a classroom of little kids through a vital year of their young lives. The fact that the book's author reports, as of press time, presumably, that he had sung "Happy Birthday" to students in his classroom 657 times, tells a lot about the larger impact a teacher has. Meantime, the bite-sized essays in this book are perfect for the hurried teaching life.

    Do Teachers Go to Heaven?

A teacher died and went to Heaven…

Upon arrival in Heaven, St. Peter welcomed the teacher and said he would be accompanying her to her new home.

The first neighborhood they walked through was very nice. People were out on lawns socializing, having picnics, playing games... having a great time. When the teacher asked if this was her new neighborhood, St. Peter said it was just for doctors. (Ah, thought the teacher.)

St. Peter and the teacher walked some more… Soon they approached another neighborhood that was just as beautiful. Large homes with gorgeous landscaping and swimming pools, a golf course, cute markets along a tree-lined boulevard… Again the teacher inquired of St. Peter if this might be her neighborhood. Alas, the neighborhood was for dentists. (Ah, thought the teacher.)

On through the clouds the teacher and St. Peter walked until they came upon another neighborhood. It was too beautiful to be true. Mansions, parks, pools… St. Peter told the teacher this was her new home in Heaven. The teacher could not have been more surprised and thrilled -- except for one thing. No one was around. The mansions seemed to be empty. Where was everyone? she inquired of St. Peter. Didn't many teachers make it to heaven?

St. Peter replied that, yes, there were lots of teachers in heaven, and they would all return the next day… They were in Hell today, attending an in-service.
