This week's newsletter is sponsored by SchoolNotes.

We all know how much it means for both kids and parents to feel they have a real stake in what’s going on in your classroom -- and the FREE SchoolNotes tool from SchoolNotes.com, an Education World company, is the perfect tool to help you establish that valuable, personal connection.

As educators, we also know that a strong bond between school and home is a key ingredient in boosting student achievement. What better way to build that bond and boost achievement than with your own SchoolNotes Web page? A SchoolNotes Web page enables you to communicate directly with your students and their parents as often as you wish. As an added bonus, SchoolNotes offers three customized entry points, or homepages -- one for you, one for your students, and one for their parents. Each of those pages provides daily content of special interest.

As a classroom teacher you need to have a FREE SchoolNotes account. Go to http://new.schoolnotes.com/ to learn more.

    This Week’s Survey Question
Has your district issued layoff notices to any teaching staff this year?

Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

    Rules in School
Nothing is more wonderful than a well-run classroom, where students have internalized the classroom rules, and where those rules "add up" to a logical way to maintain a good learning environment. Another great thing is the positive impact the experience of learning to internalize a good set of rules has on the kids beyond the classroom. This book from the folks at The Responsive Classroom® offers a method of thinking about developing rules, including developing consequences for breaking rules. Enjoy! But no talking!

32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny
Teaching is a human job, and this book is a great one for capturing the day-to-day delights of leading a classroom of little kids through a vital year of their young lives. The fact that the book's author reports, as of press time, presumably, that he had sung "Happy Birthday" to students in his classroom 657 times, tells a lot about the larger impact a teacher has. Meantime, the bite-sized essays in this book are perfect for the hurried teaching life.

    LEAVE 'EM LAUGHING
    ==========================================================================

    Red in the Face

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of blood in the human body. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, boys and girls, if I stood on my head the blood would run into it and I would turn red in the face, right?"

All the students nodded in agreement and recognition of this fact.

"Then why is it," the teacher continued, "that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"

One quick-thinking student shouted out, "Because your feet aren't empty."

    Off to Jail

It was the end of her day when the police officer was parking her police van in front of the station. As she gathered her equipment, her K-9 partner, Champ, was barking, and she saw a little boy staring in at her.

"Is that a dog you got back there?" the little boy asked.

"It sure is," the officer replied.

Puzzled, the boy looked at her and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"

    Grammar Lesson

Teacher: Courtney, can you give me a sentence starting with the word "I"?
    Courtney: I is ...
Teacher: No, Courtney. Always start a sentence with "I am."
Courtney: OK. I am the ninth letter of the alphabet.

    Little Johnny Strikes Again

Mother: How do you like your new English teacher?
Little Johnny: I think she's biased.
    Mother: What do you mean?
Little Johnny: She thinks words can be spelled only one way.
