Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher
Harry and Rosemary Wong are, of course, among the deans of education writing in America, and this book is evidence of why. In addition to providing a lot of practical advice -- brought to life with more than 300 photos and illustrations -- the book focuses on three essential characteristics of a successful teacher, namely, positive expectations, classroom management, and lesson mastery, as well as on basic and future "understandings" that are part of the teaching life.

How We Think
John Dewey's classic treatise on what exactly "thinking" means, and how, starting from that definition, it makes sense to educate students to actually do it, is not light beach reading, but this relatively brief book is well worth a rainy weekend. Together with Dewey's "Democracy and Education," "How We Think" provides the modern reader with a clear understanding of the foundations of American educational thought.

    This Is the Captain Speaking

About 90 fifth-graders piled into an airliner on their way home from a school trip. Once the plane was in the air and the crew began serving drinks, no amount of pleading seemed to settle down the students so the other passengers might get some sleep and enjoy their flight. Nothing seemed to help... until the captain picked up his mike in the cockpit and announced... "Children, this is the captain speaking. Don't make me stop this airplane and come back there!"

    Out on a Limb

Q: Where do young trees learn their lessons?
    A: At elm-'n'-tree school.

    Young Wisdom

When her grandson asked how old she was, one grandmother teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." Her grandson's response: "Look in your underwear, Grandma. Mine says I'm four to six."

"Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. In response, one small boy said, "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," the young boy replied confidently. "It means carrying a child."

A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. "Do they use him to keep crowds back?" asked one youngster. "No," said another, "he's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrant."

    Geography Lesson

Teacher: What are the small rivers that run into the Nile?
    Sammy: The juve-niles!

    Little Johnny Strikes Again

Teacher: Johnny, why are you doing your math sums on the floor?
Johnny: Because you told me to do it without using tables!
