Read our rhyme to children and let them perform the movements.

Feel the wind as it blows, blows, blows.
Oh, my hat, there it goes, goes, goes!

Here's my kite flying high, high, high
While clouds move in the sky, sky, sky.

Small waves churn in the bay, bay, bay,
What else moves on a windy day?

ACTIVITY IDEAS

EATING KITES
Toast pieces of bread cut into kite shapes and give one to each child. Mix drops of different food coloring into separate bowls. Add cream cheese to each bowl and mix. Let children choose the color cream cheese they want and help them spread it onto their toast. Place on a paper plate and add red licorice strings to create kite tails. Enjoy!

WHERE IN THE WORLD?
Read to children the online story Go Fly a Kite, by Steven Woodman. Talk about the various places Rachael visited as she traveled with her kite. Ask children to imagine where in the world they might want to go if they flew off with their kites. Let children illustrate their responses and complete this sentence frame located at the bottom of their pictures: "I flew with my kite to ________________."

A WINDY GAME
Have children sit in a circle. Choose one person to be "the wind" and stand in the center of the circle. The "wind" then moves his/her arms and chants, "The wind blows everyone who has brown hair (or a red shirt)," and so on. Children having those attributes—including the person, who is the wind—must stand and move to another seat. The child left standing will be "the wind" as play continues.

IT'S A KITE!
Give each child a paper plate and let him/her decorate it. Next, help children glue foot-long crepe paper streamers onto the edge of their plates. On the opposite edge of each plate, punch a hole. Tie a length of string through the hole. Now, wrap yarn around a craft stick for each child. Tape that yarn in place, and tie the end of the yarn to the piece of string on the plate. Children can now use the craft stick to fly their kites on a windy day.

WORD CORNER
Here are some words you will need.
See them, say them...hey, you can read!!

kite dry wind

Write the words on a chart and review them. Read each sentence aloud. Try each word in each sentence. Let children tell you which word fits.

1. The wind will the wet clothes. (dry)
2. The wind is moving my ___________ (kite)
3. Wow, the _______________ is strong.(wind)
