Read our poem aloud to children. Ask questions to check comprehension and listening skills: What was the dentist's name? What did he say about the child's teeth? Reread a stanza and ask children to tell you which words rhyme. Ask: what might the word kindly mean?

Tip-Top Teeth

"How are your teeth?
Let's have a look,"
Said the kindly
Doctor Zook.

I opened wide.
He took a while.
Then he gave a
Great big smile,

"I see you brush
Both day and night.
Your tip-top teeth
Are white and bright!

ACTIVITY IDEAS

KEEP 'EM WHITE!
Read to children Ready, Set, Brush (Sesame Street), by Che Rudko. Pre-cut a tooth shape from gray paper. Give a tooth shape to each child. Give each child a toothbrush and some white paint mixed with bubblegum-flavored toothpaste. Let children dip their toothbrushes into the mixture and brush their "tooth" to make it bright and white. *Remind children to keep toothbrushes out of their mouths.

HAPPY TOOTH OR SAD TOOTH?
Talk with children about foods that are healthful for teeth (happy-tooth foods) and sweet sugary foods that are not as good for teeth (sad-tooth foods). Invite children to look through old magazines to find pictures of each type of food. Help students cut the pictures out. Then let students create collages by gluing photos on one sheet of paper labeled Happy-Tooth Foods and on another labeled Sad-Tooth Foods. Display the collages in the classroom and refer to them as you talk about dental health.

LET'S FLOSS
Teach children that flossing teeth is just as important as brushing them. Explain that flossing help remove food bits from between the teeth. Then let children try this exercise: Have two children face each other. One child holds a length of yarn. The other child holds up his/her hand with the fingers spread out. Help the child with the yarn wind each end of the yarn around a finger on each hand for a good grip. Then, help that child move the floss up and down the sides of each finger on the other child's hand. Explain that this is how we floss our teeth to remove debris.

MODELS OF YOUR MOUTH!
Tell children that they have 20 baby teeth in their mouths. Explain that grown-ups have more (32). Tell children they will make models of their mouths. Give each child two pre-cut half-circles of pink paper. Discuss that these stand for their upper and lower gums. Now give children 20 mini marshmallows. Explain that these are their "teeth." Help children glue ten teeth around the edges of each half circle, explaining that this is how the insides of their mouths look.

WORD CORNER
Here are some words you will need.
See them, say them...hey, you can read!!

teeth white brush

Write the words on a chart and review them. Read each sentence aloud. Try each word in each sentence. Let children tell you which word fits.

1. Did you _____________your teeth? (brush)
2. Your teeth look nice and ___________.(white)
3. We should all keep our _______________ clean. (teeth)
