Use our poem to kick off your Presidents' Day unit. Read the poem, then invite children to recite what they would do if they were president. Record each child's response on a piece of drawing paper. Then let him/her illustrate it.

Presidents' Day

Our presidents are people
Who lead our country so...
That we can live and work
And help our freedom grow.

We think of our presidents
Today and other days.
So let's remember them
With honor and with praise!

ACTIVITY IDEAS

WHICH SIDE WINS?
Read to children Our Abe Lincoln, by Jim Aylesworth. Talk about the man and explain that we celebrate him on Presidents' Day. Create a large simple graph with two columns--one labeled "Heads" and the other "Tails." Give each child a penny to toss. Let the child color in a box under the correct label, to indicate whether the penny landed on heads or tails. The column with the most colored boxes after everyone has had a turn is the winner.

PRESIDENTS' DAY SNACKS
Purchase refrigerated crescent-style roll dough. In each flattened triangle of dough, place 1 tablespoon cherry pie filling. Place another triangle of dough on top of the pie filling and pinch the edges of the two triangles together. Bake according to package directions. Let cool and serve these cherry treats to students!

PRESIDENTIAL COLLAGES
Precut black paper silhouettes of George Washington and Abe Lincoln. Next, help children create collages. Children can tear pieces of red, white and blue paper and paste them onto a large sheet of paper. Finally, help students glue a silhouette of Washington or Lincoln on top of the cut paper pieces. Display collages on a bulletin board.

CHOP IT DOWN!
Let children sit in a circle. Have one student stand in the middle of the circle with his/her eyes closed. That student is the "cherry tree." Choose a child from the circle to go to the "cherry tree" and say, "Chop, chop, chop it down." The student who is the cherry tree then gently falls down, while the other player returns to his/her place in the circle. The cherry tree opens his eyes and tries to guess who cut him down. If the guess is correct, the player from the circle becomes the cherry tree, and the game continues.

WORD CORNER
Here are some words you will need.
See them, say them...hey, you can read!!
